Library and Computer Lab: Every child in our program has computer
lab no less than twice a week. Children
who are in attendance for five days a week will have computers for four days
and library for one day in that week.
There is an enrichment program which consists of a story that is read to
the children followed by a project that further enhances their
understanding. These projects go home
with the child so he can share his experience.
In the computer lab, children learn listening skills, reading
comprehension, sound recognition, phonics, word recognition and polite,
library/lab behavior. These children
will be evaluated three times during the year with a report sent home to
parents. The exception to this is the
two year old. For this age group, the
focus is to enter the lab quietly and calmly, put on headphones, operate the
program, manipulate the mouse and remain focus for 5, 10, then 15 minutes. We have over 75 computer programs with 18
computers running at one time to accommodate 18 students. The library has over 3500 books and an
extensive teacher resource library. With
your permission, children 4 and 5 years old will be able to check out one or
two books to take home. Books returned
on time permit your child to repeat this activity throughout the year. If you sign permission for younger children,
you will have to check out the books for him.
Other
Information
Playground: The playground is a 6 foot high
enclosure with two access gates and a fully mulched play area. With increased enrollment, the playground is
being increased to accommodate the needs of the children. Age appropriate play equipment is
provided. The classes have an assigned
recess, age specific. In inclement
weather, the parish hall is available for teacher-directed, supervised
play. At all times, two teachers remain
with the class.
Snacks and lunch: In accordance with state regulations,
water is served with crackers, dry cereal or animal crackers which Little
Saints and Scholars provide. Prior to
eating lunch, children recite a blessing of thanksgiving, led by their
teachers. Children bring their own lunch
and beverage, eat in the common room with both teachers and clean up after
themselves to further encourage responsibility for self. In the event of a birthday, the parent of the
birthday child can send cupcakes or cookies that will be served AFTER lunch has
been consumed.
Faculty and staff: Little Saints and Scholars follow the
diocesan and parish Safe Environment policy requiring that children be
supervised by two adults who have been cleared by the Safe Environment program
as well as attaining clearance by the state.
The teachers are required to take 15 continuing education credits each
year. They have monthly meetings as a
group with the director and meetings with lead teachers as needed. The teachers take an active part in
fundraising in order to defray expenses that would otherwise be incurred by the
parents of our students. Teachers
decorate their rooms, bulletin boards and halls promoting the curriculum at the
time. They choose and create the crafts
that enhance the lesson of the day. They
openly communicate with parents. The
four year olds and kindergarten class will receive evaluations at the end of
the year to assess these children for their academic promotions. Teachers make objective observations of
students that may require parental involvement, confidentially. All teachers treat each child with love and
respect and promote the nourishment of the child’s body, mind and soul.
